When should you indicate when moving off?

Published on

You should always signal before you start moving. If you find yourself in a situation, like the one in the picture, where you cannot start right away, you should not indicate. The correct procedure is to wait for the red car behind you to pass. After it passes, check your interior mirror, exterior side mirror, and look over your left shoulder to ensure there are no vehicles in your blind spots. Only then should you signal to the left before starting, even if no cars are coming from behind. Remember the rule of thumb: the 4S's—mirror, mirror, shoulder, signal. If there are many cars behind you, and they are moving slowly in a queue, it’s okay to signal to the left to indicate your intentions. Some drivers may then make space for you to start moving. In heavy traffic, you are allowed to create a necessary inconvenience by starting your vehicle in parallel. Lastly, always remember to signal before changing lanes when vehicles are behind you, especially on the highway.
