Driving in the middle of the road

Published on

A 2 minus 1 road is a road that appears to have only one lane of traffic in each direction. There are wide shoulders on both sides that are used by cyclists and pedestrians and are marked with dashed/dotted 30 cm edge lines.

On these roads, you should ride in the middle as long as there is no oncoming traffic. If there is oncoming traffic, move to the right onto the shoulder. If there are pedestrians or cyclists in front of you, wait to pass them until there is room again. The speed limit is max. 60 km/h outside built-up areas and max. 50 km/h in built-up areas.

These 2 minus 1 roads are designed to improve road safety for vulnerable road users on narrow roads, both rural and urban.

The posters show where to position yourself when driving on these roads - like the two happy smileys, of course - where there are wide dotted lines with space for pedestrians and cyclists.

Parking is allowed on a 2 minus 1 road. The dotted lines may be crossed and the car parked on the side of the road - unless there are no parking signs or there are other common reasons for not being allowed to park.
