Rijverbod of rijontzegging: wat is het verschil?

Published on

The terms driving ban and driving disqualification are often used interchangeably, but they do not mean the same thing.

Driving Ban

A driving ban is usually imposed directly by the police, for example for alcohol or drug use. You are temporarily prohibited from driving a vehicle.

With a driving ban, you are usually also prohibited from cycling if the ban applies to all vehicles in traffic.

Think of: temporarily not participating in traffic.

Driving Disqualification

A driving disqualification is a sentence imposed by a judge. You temporarily lose your driving license for motor vehicles.

With a driving disqualification, you are usually allowed to cycle, because a bicycle is not a motor vehicle.

Think of: temporarily losing your driver's license.

Brief difference

Driving ban = temporarily not driving, sometimes not cycling either Driving disqualification = not driving motor vehicles, cycling is usually allowed

Mnemonic

Ban = completely forbidden Disqualification = driver's license disqualified
