Taking a turn with multiple lanes: avoid this common mistake!

Taking a turn with multiple lanes: avoid this common mistake! When taking a turn with multiple lanes, it can sometimes be confusing which lane you should follow. Things often go wrong, especially at large intersections and traffic lights. Some drivers start in the correct lane, but end up in a different lane during or after the turn. This can lead to dangerous situations.

How do you avoid this mistake?

1. Choose the right lane in advance

Well before you take the turn, look at the traffic signs, the arrows on the road surface and any pre-selection lanes. These show which direction you may take from each lane.

Do you need to turn left? Then choose the lane intended for that. Always follow the indicated direction of travel.

2. Stay in your own lane during the turn

A common mistake is that drivers take the turn too wide or too tight. As a result, they unintentionally end up in another lane.

Tip: Don't just look at the turn itself, but also at the lane you need to end up in after the turn. Steer calmly and follow the lines of your lane.

3. Watch out for other road users

When several lanes go in the same direction, vehicles next to you may take the turn at the same time. If you change lanes without looking properly, you could get in another vehicle's way or even cause a collision.

So keep looking around you and take other road users into account.

4. What if you are about to end up in the wrong lane?

Don't try to steer sharply at the last moment to still end up in the lane you wanted. That can be dangerous.

Follow your own lane as much as possible. Did you end up in a different lane after the turn than you wanted? Stay calm, check the traffic around you and only change lanes when it is safe to do so.

Remember this for your CBR practical exam

  • Look at the arrows and traffic signs before the turn.
  • Choose the right lane in good time.
  • Follow the lines of your lane during the turn.
  • Take vehicles next to you into account.
  • Don't correct your position abruptly.

The most important rule: choose the right lane in good time and stay in it throughout the turn. This way you avoid unnecessary risks and keep traffic safe and clear.
