Aquaplaning

Published on

Did you know that the car’s tire contact patch is generally smaller than the size of your hand?

Aquaplaning (hydroplaning) is a dangerous occurrence of a layer of water under the tread of the tire when the tire loses direct contact with the asphalt surface and the vehicle begins to slide uncontrollably, which leads to loss of control of the vehicle. This happens under heavy rain or when you go through a puddle. The tire threads are designed to throw out water and gain traction with the road.

When you enter a puddle with a high speed on one side of your car, let’s say the right pair of wheels for example, it can make your steering wheel turn to the right, if you are not prepared for it you can lose control, hold your steering wheel firmly and expect it.

Here are some useful tips to help you avoid aquaplaning as much as possible:

  • We recommend that you check your tire pressure at least once a month, both too high and too low tire pressure result in poor contact between the tire and the road, whereby road grip deteriorates and the car's handling characteristics can change significantly.
  • Try to look further ahead so you can spot large puddles and prevent aquaplaning.
  • Reduce your speed to increase the chances of keeping in contact with the tire and the road. Brake and accelerate gently so you maintain control of the vehicle, sharp and quick maneuvers can cause you to lose control. Buy new tires which will help throw out more water through the threads, A worn tire pattern reduces grip in wet conditions. Incorrect choice of tire type can have a significant impact on road grip.
  • If possible switch lanes, the middle lane tends to be drier than the lanes closer to the edge of the road.

Remember that you can never completely reduce the risk of aquaplaning but combining these tips can make your chances of finding yourself in a dangerous situation much smaller. Check out more about driving regulations and guides on topexam.nl and get ready for your theory test.
